Analyzing Photos and Prints
OBSERVE

What people and objects are shown?

What is the physical setting?
What do you notice first?
In this picture the only person is George when he was in his early twenties.
It look like this picture was taken while George was still in school or even when he was working at his job.
The thing I noticed first about this man is the condition of the picture. the fact that it was black and white and the picture is blurry shows proves that this picture maybe from this time period or even earlier in the 19th century.
REFLECT
What’s happening in the image?
In this image, it looks like the man has something on his mind that is taking away from his happiness. My guess is that the depression is ruining his once perfect life and this picture shows him trying to cover his worries.
Who do you think was the audience for this image?
I thnk the audience for this image was just the Hartman family because it looks like all of my grandparents family photos from that time period.
If someone made this today, what would be different?
If this picture was taken today, there would be a lot different in this photo. For example, the cameras now would be able to pick up ever detail in this man's face therefore, giving the feeling of the picture a different feel. Of couse, the color today would be able to capture the place that the picture was taken a little better then in the picture from the 1930's.
QUESTION
Where?
I wonder exactally where this picture is taking place. The picture does not clearly show exactlay where the picture was taken by the photogropher.
Why?
I also wonder why this picture was taken. Why did the photographer choose to take the picture at this moment or why did he find the need to take the picture in the first place.
When?
I wonder what time period this picture was taken in. The quality of the picture proves it was taken somewhere in the early 20th century but there is no exact date.
Part 1B
This picture is a good example of the african american experience in 1935- 1940 because itshows that the means of enretainment adjusted to the times. Instead of everyone sitting in front of their televisions like we do today, people found enjoyment in music. People put aside their worries about economics and the approaching war to have fun. This picture shows the grat depression because you could see the look of worry in the man's eyes as he is trying to concentrate on playing on his fiddle.
